Calling all composers, lyricists, and singers:

Do you have a passion for music?  Do you want to put your English language skills to the test?  Do you have a bit of a competitive streak?

If so, register to participate in Hang Seng University’s first ever HSU Idol:  English Singing Contest!  This competition, organized by the Department of English, is an opportunity for you to show off your musical talent while also honing your English language skills.

There are two sessions for you to join:  the Cover Song session and the Composition session.  Please click below to read more about each session.

  • Session I: Cover Song

    During this session, performers will sing an existing English song. Please note that there is no restriction on theme and that your song should be 3-5 minutes long.

    Cover song performances will be evaluated on a 1-5 scale for their:

    • Musicality (accuracy of pitch, tone, tempo, rhythm)
    • Pronunciation/clarity
    • Interpretation (effective presentation of theme with appropriate emotion and inflexion)
    • Stage presence and creativity
    • Team work (for group performances)
  • Session II: Composition

    During this session, contestants may compose an original English song or adapt the lyrics of an existing song (as long as the adapted lyrics are in English). Please note that there is no restriction on theme and that your song should be 3-5 minutes long.

    Composition performances will be evaluated on a 1-5 scale for their:

    • Musicality (accuracy of pitch, tone, tempo, rhythm)
    • Pronunciation/clarity
    • Interpretation (effective presentation of theme with appropriate emotion and inflexion)
    • Stage presence and creativity
    • Originality
    • Message
    • English language accuracy in lyrics (e.g., word choice, grammar)
    • Team work (for group performances)

You can participate in one or both sessions, either as a group or as an individual.  Students are encouraged to form multi-talented teams!  The Department of English can assist you in creating a team if needed (please indicate your interest in the Google Form).

Please note that participants can earn 10 stamps for the Independent English Learning Award Scheme (IELAS), as well as 10 ECA hours/2 iGPS units.

Participants who make it into the final round will be eligible for a certificate issued by the Department of English, as well as book vouchers up to HK$500 per person!
