The ideal path to fulfilling the HSUHK English Language Competency Requirement: 

  1. Take ENG2000 IELTS Five-Day Workshops, or any other IELTS workshops offered by the ELC to understand the format and requirement of the Test;
  2. Practice and prepare BEFORE taking IELTS; and
  3. Take the IELTS (Academic Test).
  • ENG2000 is a non-credit-bearing series of workshops. 
  • The registration of ENG2000 will be done via the module registration system. 
  • NO ADD/DROP will be allowed after module registration. 
  • All students are required to complete two compulsory IELTS mock practices, one during the first session in Week 1 and another during the final session. No makeup arrangements will be made for the mock practices. A medical certificate is required for sick leave approval.
  • ONLY sign up if you can be committed to ALL sessions in a group, including the two compulsory IELTS mock practices.
  • ENG2000 is on a first-come, first-served basis (Max: around 25 students per class).
  • Late application will not be considered.
  • 100% attendance (15 hours) is required to complete ENG2000. ENG2000 has a 15-minute grace period. If you are more than 15 minutes late, leave early, or are absent during class, your attendance for that session will not be counted. You must submit a doctor’s certificate within 5 school days for sick leave approval.
  • If you do not achieve 100% attendance, you will be charged a HK$500 course fee. 
  • If you have successfully been given a place but do not attend any workshop, you will still be charged a HK$500 course fee.
  • Any absence, early leave, or lateness without a legitimate reason means you will not successfully complete ENG2000.
  • You will be marked absent if you do not get prior approval from the module teacher for missing any part of a session. 
  • Drop request from ENG2000 student will be considered ONLY if the Department of English receives a passed IELTS transcript by email (eng@hsu.edu.hk), and the transcript must arrive before the last session in which the student is enrolled.
  • ENG4000 English Proficiency Course is a course for students who cannot meet the English Language Exit Requirement, provided that they have attempted the IELTS Test at least twice and passed ENG2000 IELTS Preparation Course / IELTS Five-Day Workshops.
  • Apply via the MS form sent by the Department of English.
  • 3-hour lecture once a week, 14 weeks (42 hours in total) in semester 1 or semester 2.
  • 3-hour lecture twice a week, 7 weeks (42 hours in total) in the summer semester.
  • Non-credit-bearing, HK$2,000 non-refundable fee for AY2025/26.
  • ENG4000 is on a first-come, first-served basis. Late application will not be considered.
  • Your application will not be processed without valid IELTS results and completion of ENG2000.
  • ONLY sign up if you can be committed to attend at least 80% of the sessions. Students who have been absent from class for more than TWO sessions due to reasons other than illness result in an automatic failure in the course.
  • NO ADD/DROP will be allowed after module registration.
  • Students who have successfully been registered but fall below 80% attendance or do not attend any sessions will still be charged the course fee. 
  • Pass = Fulfill all assessments AND meet the 80% attendance requirement.
  • Students are entitled to retake the course if failing it.

Your final study year.

You need to enrol for ENG4000 again, on a first come, first served basis.

ENG4000 is offered all year round. Students are encouraged to take IELTS to fulfil the English Language Exit Requirement.
