The ideal path to fulfilling the HSUHK English Language Competency Requirement is: 

  1. Take ENG2000 IELTS Five-Day Workshops, or any other IELTS workshops offered by the ELC to understand the format and requirement of the Test;
  2. Practice and prepare BEFORE taking IELTS; and
  3. Take the IELTS (Academic Test).
  • ENG2000 is a non-credit-bearing series of workshops. 
  • NO ADD/DROP will be allowed after module registration.
  • ONLY sign up if you can be committed to ALL sessions in a group.
  • ENG2000 is on a first-come, first-served basis (Max: around 25 students per class).
  • Late application will not be considered.
  • To be considered completing ENG2000, you must achieve 100% attendance. Please make sure that your timetable/ schedule allows you to all 15 hours.
  • If you have not fulfilled 100% attendance, you will be charged HK$500 as the course fee.
  • If you have successfully been given a place but do not attend any workshop, you will still be charged HK$500 as the course fee.
  • Any absence, early leave, or late-coming without a legitimate reason will still be considered NOT completing ENG2000. You may need to join ENG2000 again, all 15 hours once again.
  • A student will be deemed as absent from class if s/he fails to seek prior approval from the module teacher for not attending the full lesson with a valid reason.

This pre-sessional English language module aims to provide additional English language support to Year 2 and Year 3 Senior Year Entrants for their study and for fulfilling the English language requirement in HSUHK. This module comprises an online self-study component focusing on accurate grammar usage and vocabulary expansion; and a face-to-face component on enhancing students’ English language skills. This module is compulsory for Year 2 and Year 3 Senior Year Entrants with an Associate Degree and Higher Diploma qualification unless they fulfil the exemption conditions.

  • Apply via the Department of English
  • Must have attempted IELTS twice and fully completed ENG2000 IELTS Five-Day Workshops
  • 3-hour lecture once a week, 14 weeks (42 hours in total) in semester 1 or semester 2
  • 3-hour lecture twice a week, 7 weeks (42 hours in total) in the summer semester
  • Non-credit-bearing
  • Pass = Complete and pass all assessments + at least 80% attendance
  • HK$2,000 non-refundable fee

About ENG3000 University English for Senior Entrants

The module is mandatory for all Year-2 and Year-3 entrants with an Associate Degree / Higher Diploma qualification (admitted from Academic Year 2022/23).

Entrants who fulfil the following minimum English proficiency standard can be exempted from taking the module.

  1. Level 3 in HKDSE English Language; OR
  2. 6.0 point in IELTS; OR
  3. 540 (Paper-based), 200 (CBT) or 75 (IBT) in TOFEL; OR
  4. 680 in TOEIC; OR
  5. 490 in CET-4

You have to email an official application with proof to eng@hsu.edu.hk. Upon approval, you will be enrolled in the module in the coming semester. The details will be announced in due course. 

You are required to retake the module in the next round when the module is re-open for enrollment. The details will be announced in due course. 

Yes. Students shall attain an attendance rate of 80% to pass the module.

The module is non-credit bearing. However, “Pass/Fail” will be printed on the transcript upon completion of the course.

The whole module is completely free of charge. 

About ENG4000 English Proficiency Course

You need to enrol for ENG4000 again, on a first come, first served basis.
