Language Competency Exit Requirement

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Requirements

  1. All students are required to attain a score of 6.0 or above (a score of 6.5 or above for the BTB and BA-ENG Programmes) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test.
  2. Students who fail to meet this requirement after at least two attempts and have previously taken ENG2000 IELTS Five-day Workshops may enroll in and pass the ENG4000 English Proficiency Course at their own expense to make up for this exit requirement.
  3. Please submit your IELTS transcript to the Registry if you have achieved the required score on the IELTS test.

Application

Students may apply via the British Council or the idp Education.

Reimbursement

Current full-time undergraduate students may apply for Test Fee Reimbursement if they attain an overall band score of 7.0 or above during their study in HSUHK. For details, please visit SAO website.

The English Language Centre (ELC) offers IELTS workshops which you are welcome to join. Additionally, you can access resources available in the Library or on the Internet by visiting https://elc.hsu.edu.hk/resources/.

Yes, it will count as long as you can provide an authentic copy of your test result. If your score meets the requirement of your programme, then you are considered to have fulfilled the English language competency exit requirement.

Yes, it is possible. IELTS and IELTS for UKVI (Academic) have the same format, content, scoring, and level of difficulty. Therefore, if students obtain the required IELTS score, they may submit transcripts of IELTS for UKVI (Academic) to fulfil the Language Competency Exit Requirement.

Information regarding registration will be communicated via email from the Department of English. Additionally, you can refer to the ENG2000 and ENG4000 schedules provided above.

To better prepare for the IELTS test, students may attend the IELTS workshop organized by the ELC. For those interested in registering for ENG2000 and ENG4000, please note that registration will be available during the next semester.

The Language Competency Exit Requirement is one of the graduation requirements, and failure to fulfill any graduation requirements may result in a deferral of study. Therefore, if ENG4000 is full and students are unable to fulfill the Language Competency Exit Requirement, they may need to defer their study until they can enroll in ENG4000 in the next semester.

 

No. Students should have attempted the IELTS Test at least twice and passed ENG2000 IELTS Preparation Course /Five-Day IELTS Preparation Workshop for the registration of ENG4000. 

Yes. Students must inform the Department of English before the commencement day of the module. Failure to do so may result in a fee of $500 for ENG2000 or $2000 for ENG4000 being charged.

No. To register for ENG4000, students must have attempted the IELTS Test at least twice and passed the ENG2000 IELTS Preparation Course or the Five-Day IELTS Preparation Workshop. Therefore, attempting the IELTS test three times is not sufficient for registration and completion of ENG4000.

Students who fail ENG4000 have the option to retake the IELTS test or register for ENG4000 in the next semester.

Language Competency Exit Requirement for Mainland Students (In addition to IELTS Requirement):

Mainland students admitted to Year 1 in and after AY2019/20 are required to pass ENG1000 English for University Studies if they did not attain:

  • 120 marks or above in the English paper of the National College Entrance Examination; or
  • IELTS 5.5; or
  • TOEFL iBT 70

Application

Students will be automatically enrolled in ENG1000 English for University Studies if they are required to take this module. 

Requirement for Senior Entrants (In addition to IELTS Requirement):

Starting AY2022/23, senior entrants with an Associate Degree or Higher Diploma qualification are required to complete and pass
ENG3000 University English for Senior Entrants, a non-credit bearing pre-sessional English Language module if they did not attain:

• Level 3 or above in English Language in HKDSE
• IELTS (6.0)
• TOEFL (540 paper-based, 200 CBT, or 75 iBT)
• TOEIC (680)
• CET-4 (490)
